Families, don’t be surprised if you see the Dell Latitude 2100 show up in a classroom near you

All right, so it lacks an optical drive. But offsetting that is the laptop’s honest-to-goodness discrete GPU, an nVidia GeForce 9400M. While you won’t be able to scream through games at the screen’s 1366 by 768 (720p) native resolution, you will be able to enjoy solid frame rates playing at 800 by 600 pixels in games such as Left 4 Dead.

The lid isn’t overstated, but it isn’t understated. We noticed some nice coloring, and it got nods around crowds when observedand as with any Toshiba( Toshiba PA3383U-1BAS laptop battery) branded laptop, its bold chrome was there to remind anyone what I was using.

Upon opening the M305, you will be very (shocked, impressed, startled, stumped) to find a very new trend: a very glossy black keyboard. I’ll state this right away – I love the look, but I’m a stickler for form and function. I didn’t (and really don’t) see the point of the glossy keys. Not that they look bad in any shape or way (as they don’t, they look rather impressive) but I just know, that the clean freak in most business professionals will find it’s way to this keyboard. And it found it’s way to methe fingerprints of the quick chicken strip basket you hammer down whilst on the moving walkway will find it’s way onto your keys, and much more quickly than you had hoped. I thought immediately to myself, ‘this should prove interesting.’

The Altec-Lansing speakers got reasonably loud, but the Dell(Dell 0XR693 laptop battery) Studio 14z and the Lenovo IdeaPad Y450 turned in much better audio performance. If you decide to buy the dv4-1465dx, you might as well go straight for the headphones.

Families, don’t be surprised if you see the Dell Latitude 2100 show up in a classroom near you. As I’ve written in the past, Dell( Dell 0XR693 laptop battery) is aggressively targeting the K-8 education market with this line of rugged-looking netbooks. At the time I played with a preview unit, the machine seemed good. But now, a final review model has passed through the PC World Test Center, and it’s time to grade its performance.

The Y650 has an all-in-one bottom plate that you have to remove to access any of the internals, which makes it easy to do big upgrades, but kind of a pain to do small ones. Our laptop was more or less the high end of the Y650s on Lenovo’s site, but it’s possible to tick down the processor to a P8600 and get 3GB RAM on 32bit Vista if you want to save $100. You could also opt for integrated graphics, but currently it won’t save you a dollar (thanks to a Lenovo sale), so we don’t recommend this unless you’re insanely concerned about LENOVO 3000 battery life. There doesn’t seem to be a way to get a higher resolution screen or bigger battery, both of which would be nice additions.

This sleek machine is available in two versions: The SZ Premium model, which sports a Carbon Fiber case weighing 3.7 pounds and a razor thin LCD panel, and the standard SZ model which is wrapped in a magnesium alloy case and weighs 4.1 pounds. Speaking from my personal preference, this laptop FPCBP155 Battery fits the profile both as a perfect work machine for home and on the go. Add the optional docking station for additional connectivity including more USB ports and DVI to turn it into a portable desktop replacement machine. Of course, for a premium laptop, expect to pay a premium price.

Mobility is in demand, especially for people who travel frequently where every ounce matters

Shopokey News: Now, a quick aside on the screen: The 14z’s crisp image reproduction actually took me aback. Colors jumped and looked appropriately rich. The 720p video we installed on the hard drive ran smoothly, with the bomb bursts in a movie trailer exploding across the 14-inch panel. The machine’s display is great — so long as you look at it dead on. Veer too far to the sides, and colors fade. (Not that I expect five people to crowd around a laptop FPCBP155 Battery .) I should point out that videophiles opting to buy online from Dell can upgrade the screen to 1600 by 900 (900p).

You’ll notice that the layout isn’t obtrusive or strange, normal layout although the delete key could be closer, and if you’re used to the switched version of the FN – CTRL key layout, be prepared to yet again re-learn common shortcuts. Surprisingly, the actual use of the keyboard wasn’t that bad. Tactile feel was nice, noise was minimalbut, right away, I did notice that if you didn’t wash your hands in the last 10 minutes or so, you’re leaving your mark on them.

The dv4-1465dx takes connectivity seriously, offering gigabit Ethernet ports, three USB ports (one of them a hybrid eSATA port that’s perfect for high-speed data), a flash card reader, a PC card slot, a DVD-RW, an olde tyme modem, two headphone jacks, PA3154U-1BAS battery,a mic, and a touch-inductive shortcut panel above the keyboard that provide quick access to audio controls and to the onboard 802.11b/g Wi-Fi.

The multicolored 2100 certainly looks like a playground portable. Covering the outside of the case is the same familiar kickball rubber from your schoolyard days, with subtle branding on the lid and on the underbelly. (Samsung Go, I’m looking at you, pal!) Meanwhile, the spine of the netbook (the back of the Inspiron 1300 Battery ) has a little plastic strip for personalizing the machine–you know, like a “This netbook belongs to…” tag. Now, while the coating resembles that of a ball, you shouldn’t go kicking this thing around. “Ruggedized” doesn’t exactly mean rugged. The 2100 definitely looks and feels fairly sturdy for the tasks at hand, but it ain’t some OLPC.

The IdeaPad Y650 comes loaded with Veriface facial recognition technology, which essentially lets you capture an image of your face with the integrated webcam and use it instead of a password to login. The feature is cool and extremely quick and easy to use, but in extreme cases it can still be hacked just like a password, so it’s no reason to be careless if you store sensitive material on your laptop Thinkpad X60 battery. The Y650 also comes with the front loading DVD drive, which we’re counting as a feature just for its uniqueness.

Mobility is in demand, especially for people who travel frequently where every ounce matters. Classified as thin-and-light, the VAIO SZ excels in portability. Measuring 12.5-inches wide, 9.3-inches long and only 0.9-inches thick at the front section and extending 1.3-inches thick towards the back, this slim notebook is made to slip easily inside most laptop carry cases or backpacks.

At 3.72 pounds with the standard Sony VAIO AR500 laptop battery, the VAIO SZ (Premium) is intended to accompany you everywhere you go, best suited for heavy travelers such as students and business professionals. Even the 4.1 pound standard SZ model won’t break your back.

HP continues to load its notebooks with games, demos, and other software that you’re bound to uninstall the second you get home

Shopokey News: Unfortunately, as for performance numbers, I can’t give you results right now since the 14z is still running through our WorldBench 6 tests. However, I do have some high hopes here. True, our test machine came with only 3GB of RAM, but its Intel 2.1GHz T6500 CPU should be able to handle our tests and produce a reasonable score. I’ll revisit this article and update it with WorldBench 6 and battery-life test results as soon as possible.

On the top of the keyboard are lighted touch sensitive multimedia controls. Nothing really new or impressive, but a nice touch – harmon/kardon speakers align either side of the laptop. More on those later.

The trackpad was another entity entirely. It has a nice glowing bar above it, which is actually nice because since this is a flush mounted trackpad – unless you’re really familiar with the laptop, it’s sometimes hard to find! But that illumination plays a dirty trick tooit gets really, really bright in dark places – almost annoyingly bright. However, the trackpad does continue the ‘Fusion’ finish throughout, making it tie in rather well.

HP continues to load its notebooks with games, demos, and other software that you’re bound to uninstall the second you get home, but I appreciated the HP(HP 485041-003 laptop Battery ) Advisor bar (which sits atop the desktop view and gives you a handy shortcut for online searches) and the PC Health & Security button (for a one-stop summary of status data about the laptop. It’s by far the handiest of the preinstalled apps.

Being purpose-built for education–and being able to take a beating from a classroom of hyperactive children–is probably the 2100’s biggest selling point. Health-conscious parents will like the fact that you can clean the screen, according to Dell(Dell 0XR693 laptop battery), by regular means (don’t grab a sponge or dunk it in a bucket, though), and an antimicrobial keyboard option helps prevent the spread of germs.

And I’m sure teachers are happy that Dell(Dell 0XR693 laptop battery) has placed a strip-light on the lid that indicates Wi-Fi activity (so that you can see when kids are getting distracted by Hulu or YouTube in class, I suppose). As for whether the tykes will want to carry it, the netbook weighs approximately 2.9 pounds and measures 10.4 by 7.3 by 5.7 inches. A little heavy, maybe, but probably a whole lot more manageable than a stack of textbooks to lug home.

Like previous models, Sony(Sony VAIO AR500 laptop battery) assembled an aesthetically chic yet sleek modern business laptop. The two tone inverted color scheme keeps it sleek and refined, with black wrapping around the carbon-fiber top lid and bottom chassis.

Other nice features include the enormous touchpad, measuring 4.4 x 2.5-inches, which Lenovo(IBM 40Y6795 battery) boasts is the largest on any laptop. There is a touch slider at the top which brings up a menu composed of Easy Capture, Ready Connect, Veriface and OneKey. There is also a touch button to switch between “movie mode” and “regular” and next to that, a touch button to call up Dolby sound software. There are physical buttons on either side of the keyboard, but aside from the power button they only let you adjust volume and call up OneKey. OneKey can be run from the slider and the volume is also a function feature on the regular keyboard, so we suspect these buttons were only put in place to take your mind off the fact that the keyboard is so scrunched.

What I can tell you about is the extremely comfortable keyboard

What I can tell you about is the extremely comfortable keyboard. You get a fairly good-sized, well-spaced set of QWERTY keys. Their toughened texture is nice to the touch. And while you might miss having multimedia shortcut keys, Aspire 3000 battery,a few of the function buttons serve double duty. For instance, you can control brightness by pressing the F4 and F5 keys, while the F7 to F12 keys double as multimedia controls.

Now, kids, if you’ve been reading along so far, I’d like to ask you to do me a favor and leave the room for a bit.

Are they gone? Okay. This machine is not for kids. It’s for geeky dads who want to justify another tech purchase and maybe loan it to their children during the day. A bare-bones box with Ubuntu sells for $369 sporting the Intel 1.6GHz Atom N270 CPU, 512MB of RAM, and a 16GB solid-state drive. The fully loaded model we received (in tasteful playground-ball red, of course) runs Windows XP on 1GB of RAM (upgradable to 2GB) and a 80GB hard drive; it sells for $559Here the Y650 lags behind the pack, posting less than 2.5 hours during general use.

It should be noted that these were under the “natural” settings achieved when disconnecting the power cord. If you use the included FPCBP160 battery stretching software to the fullest, it’s likely you can reach just about 3 hours. We said it before about the USB ports, you can’t shed pounds without making sacrifices.

Here the Y650 lags behind the pack, posting less than 2.5 hours during general use. It should be noted that these were under the “natural” settings achieved when disconnecting the power cord. If you use the included PA3248U-1BAS battery stretching software to the fullest, it’s likely you can reach just about 3 hours. We said it before about the USB ports, you can’t shed pounds without making sacrifices.

One of the striking design elements lies in the laptop’s ultra-thin LCD panel measuring only 4.5mm (.18′) thick. To accomplish this, Sony(Sony VGP-BPS5 laptop battery ) adopted LED (Light-emitting diode) backlight technology (more on this in the display section of the review). Even for such a thin LCD screen, the SZ manages to squeeze in a built-in web camera with microphone at the top-center of the panel.

For added durability similar to the VAIO TX, the VAIO SZ Premium model is encased in a multi-layered carbon-fiber casing, which is stronger yet lighter than other materials (i.e. magnesium-alloy) used in most notebooks today, including the SZ standard model. The top of the line VGN-SZ281P/X comes with the Premium Carbon Fiber. Go here for a comparison break down between the Premium and standard models.

On top of that, for a little style, the power button rests in the barrel hinge connecting the keyboard and screen, à la the Gateway UC7807u or any number of Sony(Sony VGP-BPS5 laptop battery) laptops. The touchpad, however, is where I ran into a little trouble: The touch zone was good enough, for sure, but the buttons felt a little too small and junky. I would have loved seeing something a bit larger.

This is as good an opportunity as any to talk about how the rest of the laptop is designed

Shopokey News:This is as good an opportunity as any to talk about how the rest of the laptop is designed. The machine is fairly light (4.3 pounds) and lean (13.1 by 9.0 by 0.8 inches). On the top is a slightly rubberized lid that’s reminiscent of what Dell( Dell 312-0567 laptop battery) is doing with the Latitude 2100. The rest of the case consists of a slim, sloped, silvery plastic that makes the chassis look classy.

The left side houses a standard RGB output, fan, FAKE HDMI output (which leads me to believe other units may poses this function, or at least this chassis will get that upgrade) two USB 2.0 ports, a mini-firewire port and audio out/ mic in. It also has an Express card slot tucked above the latter ports, which offer some benefit to using newer technology.

First, the good: Indoors the screen looks nice enough, and while it’s not exactly razor-sharp, your child probably won’t complain. In our use, the colors were only slightly muted. Streaming video from Hulu ran at a steady clip with no major gaffes. And there’s no denying that a touchscreen is pretty snazzy. All it took was a quick recalibration (the software, oddly, didn’t come preinstalled on the netbook, but it is downloadable from Dell( Dell 312-0567 laptop battery)’s support site), and it worked like a charm. With fairly solid accuracy, I was able to navigate Web sites or highlight chunks of typed text for deletion.

Considering the general use BTP-43D1 battery life, the Y650 didn’t do too badly here, comparing reasonably well to multimedia laptops like the HDX and FW270. This test was conducted with the brightness and sound-boosting movie mode enabled too. Still, it would be nice to actually finish a movie before the (rather irritating) low battery warning starts to chirp.

Between the indicator panel and keyboard is a set of hot keys, switches and the power button. The S1 & S2 are special-function buttons that are user-assigned to a particular function. At default, S1 button turns the volume on and off and the S2 button lowers the CPU speed to reduce fan noise. Of course, you can change these button assignments to your liking. Next is the Stamina/Speed switch, where you can select between the internal graphics (Intel GMA 950) for NC6400 battery efficiency or external graphics (NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400) for robust graphics performance. And lastly, the wireless switch is to turn on Wi-Fi/Bluetooth or off to conserve battery.

But let’s focus now on what the 14z manages to cram in — and what it had to omit. This thing is all about watching high-definition media with a pal (even if you don’t go to Dell’s site and opt for the 900p screen). The proof: The machine has HDMI and DisplayPort outputs but no VGA, and it provides two headphone jacks for you and a buddy to watch flicks.

Nothing out of the ordinary, however, it was a really nice, crisp, glossy display. Especially given that resolution is normally slotted for another inch and a half with 15.4′ models. It was welcomed real-estate space for sure. Colors popped well,FPCBP155 battery, brightness was even and there was no flickering. The bezel surrounding the display was rather large though, I’d like it to be a little less beveled and more slim – just preference perhaps.

In the past, I haven’t been too fond of Sony’s keyboard comfort level with the exception of the A series

Shopokey News: It also sports three USB ports (one doubles as an eSATA port), a mic jack, a 1.3-megapixel Webcam, and an ExpressCard/34 slot. But that’s it. (You know, Dell(Dell 0XR693 laptop battery), I could have done without the DisplayPort if you had instead made room for any kind of flash card slot.) As it stands, you’ll have to pony up an additional $20 for an ExpressCard slot adapter.

Even though the M305 is a 14.1′ unit, it feels a bit chunky. Although we like the robust feel, it could definitely shave off some plastic feel to make this unit a little more classy. Weight rang up to about 5 and a quarter pounds whilst the dimensions of the unit are 13.2 x 9.53 x 1.29. At nearly 1 and a half inches, the laptop seems thick – most notable again in the LCD bezel.

The downside of the display: It’s so muted that even after you put it at the brightest setting on the cloudiest day, you’ll be squinting to see what you’re typing. I should know–that’s what’s happening to me right now as I compose this review in a playground, reaquainting myself with my inner child. The only fair, close comparison would be to see how well the 2100 performs next to the Asus(asus L8000 laptop battery ) Eee PC T91. Unfortunately, that hard-to-find model isn’t making much of an appearance here in the United States. If all this touchy talk turns you off, opt for a plain screen and save a few bucks.

In general use, the IdeaPad ran cool and fairly quiet, even during DVD playback. It felt surprisingly light and the large widescreen in conjunction with the helpful “movie mode” was excellent for watching media. The relatively short VGP-BPS2C battery life didn’t prove problematic for us, but then again we never tried to take it on the road beyond going to the office and back.

With an external mouse and a USB thumb stick in tow it was worrying that there were no other USB options, FPCBP155 battery, and we anticipate trouble for those used to leaving their printer plugged in at home or charging electronics in a spare port. The recessed keyboard design also had the unfortunate side effect of extending the palm rests, which is less than comfortable. However it was weirder than it was awkward and didn’t affect typing as much as the shrunken keys themselves did.

In the past, I haven’t been too fond of Sony’s keyboard comfort level with the exception of the A series. However, the keyboard quality on the SZ has improved. The keyboard layout offers a spacious area for typing, with large-sized keys to prevent any type of cramping or even mistyping. I can type quickly, accurately, and quite comfortably.

In fact, I’m typing this review on it right now. The keys aren’t mushy or stiff by any means, but they don’t offer the same type of ’soft’ and ‘quiet’ comfort-level feel found on the keyboard from the Apple(Apple A1185 laptop battery) MacBook Pro. Thanks to the 3mm key level depth, it offers adequate depression levels to ensure a better typing experience. Noise generation is a bit loud when typing. Overall, this keyboard is sufficient for my level of typing, but doesn’t match the quality levels of the MacBook Pro or ThinkPads.

Like all Acer notebooks, the Ferrari 5005WLMi uses a special 88-key ergonomic curved keyboard

The IdeaCentre Q700 is a slightly chunkier although more powerful machine aimed squarely at the home theater PC (HTPC) FPCBP155 battery market. It sports an Intel E5200 dual-core CPU at 2.5 GHz, 4 GB memory, 320 GB SATA hard drive, DVD-RW drive, and Intel integrated GMA X4500 graphics. It also supports 1080p graphics via its HDMI connector and 7.1 digital surround sound.

MXTube Finally, a way to watch YouTube videos offline! MXTube allows you to download YouTube videos to your mobile device for viewing on the subway, plane, or in those pesky dead zones. Functionally, it works similarly to downloading podcasts from the iTunes store, and even allows background downloading.

While we were playing with the Adamo, close by Dell(Dell 312-0566 laptop battery ) staff took the opportunity (several times) to point out that it’s thinner than the MacBook Air. It is thinner than the MBA at its thickest point, but you would hardly know that from looking at it as the MacBook Air has a tapered chassis. It’s also half a pound heavier.

Unlike the Air, the Adamo comes with a 64-bit copy of Windows Vista installed. Unfortunately Vista does not run all that well on low-end systems, and there’s no option to customize the Adamo with an XP downgrade or Linux. Potential buyers might want to wait until Windows 7 is released, which will work better with slower systems and even netbooks BAT-LS Battery . On the other hand, the Adamo seems to run Vista fairly smoothly, partly thanks to the quick solid state drive.

The W7J comes in either black or white finish. It’s not the cleanest looking design around, particularly from the sides, but it is stylish. However you want to describe its appearance, it’s handsome no doubt. Each corner has soft rounded edges to make the laptop PA3248U-1BAS easier to hold and carry. Silver lining is placed around to add a touch of elegance. Simple yet classy, indeed.

Like all Acer(Acer AS07B32 Battery ) notebooks, the Ferrari 5005WLMi uses a special 88-key ergonomic curved keyboard, known as the Folio design. Key travel distance is average for a laptop: substantially less than that of a desktop but enough to type comfortably. The Page-Down, Page-Up, Home, and End keys are placed vertically on the right side of the keyboard. Like most keyboards, the numeric keyboard is activated with the Fn key.

In addition, there are function keys to adjust audio volume, alter screen brightness, disable or enable the touchpad, put the system to sleep, and more.

Otherwise, the 1.66GHz Intel Atom N280 CPU and 1GB of RAM are enough to get the job done here. While everyday applications seem to load reasonably quickly, we can’t give you the definitive scored review just yet. We’re running into a couple of WorldBench 6 test anomalies that we need to work out first. We’re also waiting on final numbers for Sony VGP-BPS2A battery life tests. Sony claims that this machine will last for 3 hours with standard usage. I obviously can’t pass judgment at this point, but that isn’t exactly a promising number for two reasons: First, our tests usually show battery life being about 30 minutes less than advertised times. Second, 3 hours is a far cry from the 10 hours that Toshiba’s NB205-310 lasted in our tests.

How does the ergonomic keyboard differ from a standard laptop keyboard?

In an effort to expand its Linux offerings, Dell is researching new netbook-type devices and will soon offer netbook Linux operating system upgrades, a company official said on Wednesday.

The company is researching the possibility of offering new Linux-based mobile devices called smartbooks, said Todd Finch, senior product marketing manager for Linux clients, at the OpenSourceWorld conference in San Francisco. The company will also upgrade its Ubuntu Linux operating system for netbooks to the latest version in the next few weeks, he said.

Hewlett-Packard reported a 2 percent drop in revenue for the July quarter, which was better than expected, and said its business is stabilizing.

Net earnings for the quarter, the third of HP(HP 482262-001 laptop battery)’s fiscal year, were US$1.6 billion, or $0.67 per share, down from $2.0 billion, or $0.80 per share, in the same quarter a year earlier, HP announced Tuesday.

Toshiba(Toshiba PA3307U-1BAS battery) knows a thing or two about squeezing a lot into a little laptop. Has the company succeeded with this student-friendly, $650 (as of 8/11/09) machine? Well, though the M505-S4940 cuts a corner (an obstructed HDMI-out) or two (an integrated GPU, a low-rent CPU), it is a decent deal with some flashy looks — and uninspiring guts.

Smartbooks are netbook-type devices that are powered by chips designed by Arm. The devices mostly support the Linux operating system and are designed for those who rely on the Web for most of their computing. Dell( Dell 312-0566 laptop battery) couldn’t say whether it would ultimately offer a smartbook.

Smartbooks have similar characteristics to netbooks, including cramped keyboards and small screens. No major PC PA3356U-1BAS battery vendor has yet announced an interest in smartbooks, though small vendors are pushing them as an alternative to netbooks, which are mostly based on Intel’s Atom chips and come with Microsoft’s Windows operating system. Many vendors, including Qualcomm and Freescale, are providing Arm chips for smartbooks that could hit shelves by the end of this year.

Open the hinge and you’re presented with a beautiful 13.3′ LCD widescreen on the top half. The built-in webcam sits ontop of the screen and is accented with silver finishing. The webcam also breaks the cleanliness of the laptop PA3248U-1BAS design by functioning as a protruded latch opening. Right below the monitor are directional speakers that blend well with the clean designs already established.

So how does the ergonomic keyboard differ from a standard laptop keyboard? After testing the keyboard for a while, I found that after a small learning curve, typing on the Folio design keyboard is akin to typing on an ergonomic desktop keyboard. The difference between the curved keyboard and a standard keyboard is not huge, but if you frequently type on the keyboard, the curvature may make a large difference. The curvature lets you keep your wrists straight, preventing your wrists from becoming sore.

As for the keyboard and mouse on the W, my initial vibe is one of disappointment. I’ve always been a fan of Sony(Sony VAIO AR500 Battery)’s cut-out keys, but for some reason the buttons here feel oddly scrunched and a little harder to use than those of many other netbooks to make their way through the PC World Test Center. And I don’t know what this says about me, but three keys that I find myself using often–Esc, Tab, Delete–and the spacebar buttons are all too small for their own good. Trying to write this review on the W, for example, took a whole lot longer than normal if only because I had to slow down and keep backtracking. Meanwhile, the oversized “1″ key all but guarantees I’ll typ1e 1’s w1hen 1 don’t mean t1o.

Smartbooks with Arm chips have inherent advantages over x86 chips like Atom

While it’s a little thick, this all-purpose laptop is luggable enough (13.5 by 9.1 by 1.5 inches and about 5.4 pounds) for the scholar on the go. One bonus: It’ll get a couple of glances from people in the local coffee shop. Our test unit sported a snazzy, streaky techno pattern painted into the glossy finish, as well as a few LED highlights around the keyboard that offered a subtle glow. The splashy design might distract some people enough that they forget to ask what CPU this hot rod has.

Smartbooks with Arm chips have inherent advantages over x86 chips like Atom, such as lower power consumption and longer FPCBP155 battery life, Finch said. The chips are also becoming more powerful, as indicated by the growing number of applications on smartphones, he said.

The company’s purchase of services giant EDS last year again helped to prop up its results. Revenue from HP(HP HSTNN-DB36 laptop battery)’s services business almost doubled thanks to the acquisition, to $8.5 billion, while sales of printers, servers and desktop PCs all declined sharply from a year earlier, HP said.

It took some time, but Dell(Dell 0XR693 battery) has finally come out with a netbook of its own in the form of the Dell Inspiron Mini 9. The 8.9″, 2.3lb subnotebook carries a 1.6GHz Intel® Atom Processor® N270, and our model came with 1GB RAM and an 8GB SSD. Despite having so little space to work with, Dell gave their Mini an integrated webcam and a decent amount of connectivity ports. While Dell couldn’t solve everything – the keyboard is still scrunched and the Atom powered unit does run warm. If you’re looking for an extremely portable computer that still has a little kick, look no further than the Dell Inspiron Mini 9.

The ASUS(ASUS L8000 laptop battery) uses a combination of carbon fiber and plastic all around to give the laptop its lightweight attributes. The black test model we received has a matte-like finish and feel which really gives off a sense of high quality. As with any product that is available in black, the W7J is susceptible to finger prints on the casing so grubby hands beware! No flexing was evident. Immediately you can tell the laptop has a sense of sturdiness. Fit and finish is also very good.

The Ferrari 5005WLMi’s touchpad is of average size and includes a 4-way scroll as well as the standard two mouse buttons. The buttons and the rim of the touchpad are a shiny gunmetal color. While there is no enable/disable button or switch for the touchpad, I found that the Ferrari’s touchpad was quite excellent. In the past, I’ve found standard laptop PA3248U-1BAS touchpads to be too sensitive, and I would frequently move the mouse pointer to places that I did not intend to, especially when typing. I did not have this problem with the Ferrari 5005WLMi at all.

The touchpad garners fewer gripes because it has an average-sized strike zone with a texture difference so you know where your fingers should be. But unfortunately, it lacks multitouch driver functionality, and it has two plastic buttons that feel a little shallow. They don’t feel as if they are going to fall off, but maybe nice, firm metallic buttons camping closer to the lower edge would have been better.

Having a stylish laptop is pointless if it is not comfortable to type with

The machine has a low-octane 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T4200 processor. Combine that with the 4GB of RAM and the integrated GPU, and the M505 has just enough power to run the 64-bit flavor of Vista Home Premium. The machine earned a fairly mediocre score of 76 in WorldBench 6 — it won’t win any races, but it will get out of first gear and run basic apps well. It just won’t run them for very long: The M505 lasted for only about 3.5 hours in our drain tests, below the 4-hour average. Even Sony(Sony PCGA-BPZ51A laptop Battery)’s big, beefy 15.5-inch back-to-school special (the VAIO VGN-NW125J) ran for over 4 hours in our tests.

Putting an Arm chip — mainly found in smartphones — inside a lightweight PC could provide an early entry point for Dell(Dell 0XR693 Battery ) into the smartphone space, said Jay Chou, research analyst at IDC. Dell has hinted at entering the smartphone area many times, but no product has materialized yet.

Overall revenue came in at $27.5 billion, better than the $27.3 billion financial analysts had been expecting, according to Thomson Reuters. The net profit before restructuring costs and other one-time items was $0.91 per share, a penny better than the analyst forecast.

The first word that comes to mind when you look at the Inspiron Mini is glossy.
