The 4000-MAh battery might keep the weight down to 6.3 pounds, but it will barely last 2 hours. Don’t leave home without the power cord, even for short afternoons down at the coffeehouse.

If pocketbook concerns are paramount, the A305-S6864 is a great choice, especially for audiophiles. But it isn’t the laptop for long work stints away from an outlet, and Blu-ray movie fans won’t be happy with it.

As an inexpensive computer, you will get your money’s worth. It’s cool to be able to stay connected on long car rides or in out-of-the-way places. If you are the impatient type, however, there will be times when you are drumming your fingers. In today’s hyper high-speed times, that is often a major consideration.

The dv4-2045dx ran for 2 hours and 31 minutes on our video playback battery drain test, using the included six-cell battery. This is pretty short in comparison with other systems that are at or below its price. However, the hard drive also spins at 7,200rpm, which helps explain why it’s shorter than most on our demanding drain test. In anecdotal testing, we got up to 3 hours of laptop battery life; not great, but more typical of what you can expect. Also, despite being Energy Star qualified, it costs more to run it annually than any of the other budget notebooks in our roundup .

The NW270’s highlight feature is its optical drive. It’s capable of playing Blu-ray discs and reading and writing DVDs and CDs. Blu-ray support typically shows up on larger, pricier laptops, though it has started to trickle down the price ladder. To wit, the 17.3-inch HP Pavilion dv7-3065dx features a Blu-ray drive and costs $729.

Take the battery life you see advertised for any laptop with a grain of salt. Why? A few vendors still use unrealistic testing parameters in order to report the longest A1175 battery life possible. For example, a “tested” laptop simply might be turned on, with the screen brightness lowered to the darkest level, and allowed to run down without anyone touching it. When the laptop undergoes typical, everyday use–say, with the screen brightness turned up to a readable level and with the user working in several applications or playing a CD or DVD movie–its battery life could be much shorter than a vendor’s claims.

The latest 17-inch MacBook Pro is by all measures a minor hardware upgrade over its predecessor, offering only slightly faster processor options and an increase in hard-drive capacity. The more significant change is the value you get for your money. If you purchased a 17-inch MacBook Pro after February’s unibody introduction, you have little reason to upgrade now–or to regret your purchase. There are a few reasons why we choose to use TMPGEnc for our tests. The first relates to the reasons laid out above. The sheer ease of use and flexibility is appreciated. Beyond that, the application does us a huge favor by tracking the encoding time, so that we can actually look away while an encode is taking place and not be afraid that we’ll miss the final encoding time. Believe it or not, not all transcoding applications work like this.

I haven’t touched the 4GB model of the notebook, so it could be that things improve a little there, but I can’t state for that certain. It does surprise me, though, that with Vista running on a low-powered notebook like this, HP had no problem with loading the hard drive to the nines with bloatware. But ahem, I’ve already whined about that enough as is.

All of this is stored on the recovery partition, which should never be formatted or deleted because it also contains the factory image. For most people, the built-in iSight on a Apple MacBook or iMac is probably sufficient for video chatting or recording clips for YouTube. But the BT-1 is a reasonable alternative to buying a wired camera for those who don’t have an included Webcam–Mac Pro and Mac mini users, for example–and a handy solution for those who want the ability to roam and record (within 30 feet, of course).

All that performance and graphics gain is great until you realize that it takes a hit on the 1201N’s laptop battery life. Its six-cell battery lasted 2 hours and 26 minutes with a 1080p WMV video running on loop, and we got about three and a half hours of runtime using the laptop to just surf the web and write this review in Microsoft Word. That’s not terrible battery life, but it’s not so great compared to other six-cell netbooks like the ASUS Eee PC 1008HA, which runs for about six hours.

Futuremark is no stranger to most any enthusiast out there, as the company’s benchmarks have been used to gauge our PC’s worth for many years. Although the company’s 3DMark Vantage (which we also use for testing) is arguably more popular than PCMark Vantage, the latter is a great tool to measure a system’s overall performance across many different scenarios.

One common issue with gaming notebooks is that after a few hours of playing, the unit can become so hot, that performance slows down. On this notebook  it does get warm (especially in the back), but I spent hours on this thing and didn’t have a real problem. There were of course some sticks during gameplay throughout some of the games, but this is typical behaviour, even on a desktop.

Should you decide to restore the factory image, however, you shouldn’t plan to use the notebook again too soon after you begin the process. I ran the total recovery twice in the time I had the notebook, and each time it took over three hours to complete. Most notebooks I’ve used recently have only taken one hour tops, so to see this one take three hours… it was a little jaw-dropping. For comparison, the ASUS  Eee PC 1008HA we reviewed a few weeks ago restored itself in about fifteen minutes.

Toshiba’s stamps the R600 with its EasyGuard package, a mix of hardware and software to protect and enhance your system. In this case, that includes a spill-resistant keyboard, Trusted Platform Module (TPM) encryption, Toshiba ’s ConfigFree wireless-setup utility, and Skype for VoIP calls, plus proprietary utilities for zooming, changing the resolution, saving power, and turning off the optical drive and touch pad, among other functions.
